Haret Hreik, Beirut -- Sausan Kasim and her daughters Malak and Fatima on the terrace of their apartment. Sausa met her husband Mahmood in the bomb shelter of this building during the 1982 Israeli invasion. The Kasim family were one of few, if not the only family from the devastated suburb who had moved back to live after the war.This is the universal face of war and it makes me weep. Bombed myself as a child more than half a century ago, I realise now that the nationalities of both the victims and the bombers are irrelevant. It is always, whatever the pretext, simply violence perpetrated upon the innocent by those with a mind to violence. It must stop, we must find a way to stop it, but after a lifetime working for peace there are times when I come near to despair. Work such as yours gives me the heart to continue.
