The Walrus Foundation Internships

Advertising interns are involved in all aspects of sales and administration including, but not limited to, material organization and collection, insertion order tracking, sponsorship task management, media kit compilation, digital impression tracking, national and retail sales, and billing.

Receiving invaluable experience learning national and retail sales strategies from experienced sales executives, developing key relationships with industry professionals, and working closely with the director of sales and the national sales representative on territory development and retention, you should be a self-motivated individual with a high desire to succeed and a passion for print advertising.

Internship terms are four months, unpaid. Each session has one intern working thirty hours per week, with some flexibility in scheduling in order to allow for part-time work. There may be intermittent opportunities for an intern to develop a small sales territory on a commission-only basis.

The Walrus Art Internship gives aspiring designers the opportunity to work alongside members of the magazine’s award-winning art department. Interns will hone their layout and typesetting skills, learn about the mechanics of magazines and editorial assigning, and will apply this knowledge to the highest standards of the magazine industry.

There are two six-month art internship sessions per year, with one intern chosen for each. Application deadlines are:

The Walrus Foundation Development Internship is designed for those interested in the nonprofit and voluntary sector, specifically in a small shop. Interning for the charitable, non-profit Walrus Foundation, the development intern will work closely with the director of development, co-publisher and executive director, board members, volunteers, and staff from the circulation, marketing, special projects, and administrative departments.

A major component of this position is assisting with donor outreach/maintenance/recognition, fundraising activities, grant applications, mail campaigns, and upkeep of donor database to facilitate donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. The development intern will also be given the opportunity to sit in on Walrus Foundation board and committee meetings.

The ideal candidate will hold a university degree or equivalent and/or have completed a fundraising management program, be highly organized, efficient, and detail/deadline oriented. Other qualifications include excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, and, of course, an interest in fundraising and the nonprofit sector. Familiarity with all Microsoft professional applications — especially Excel — is essential, and working knowledge of Filemaker Pro and Salesforce.com is definitely a plus.

Like the editorial internship, the development internship operates on a six-month, unpaid term. Each session has the interns working thirty hours per week, with some flexibility in scheduling in order to allow for part-time work. The next six-month term will start on March 6, 2012.

The walrusmagazine.com digital internship is designed to introduce aspiring web developers and producers to the online publishing industry and to train them to work to the standards of one of North America’s finest general interest publications.

The digital intern has the opportunity to be involved in all stages of online publishing, from the development and maintenance of walrusmagazine.com and other Walrus Foundation web properties to the production of Walrus magazine articles for browser and tablet reading. The digital intern’s primary responsibilities are assisting in development of a new version of walrusmagazine.com, building and maintaining special projects such as The Walrus Laughs, and converting magazine content for web use. Knowledge of HTML and CSS is required; knowledge of PHP and MySQL is beneficial but not required. Preference will be given to applicants with advanced knowledge of WordPress.

Applicants must be graduates of a post-secondary academic institution. Those who do not meet this criterion may make a case for consideration on the basis of exceptional circumstances.

The Walrus’s editorial internship program introduces aspiring editors and writers to the magazine industry and trains them to the standards of Canada’s most-awarded magazine. Editorial interns participate in all stages of the production process. Primary responsibilities include:

Interns also take part in production meetings and story conferences, shadow-edit articles with senior editors, and assist with Walrus Foundation events. To complement and enhance their experience, they attend a comprehensive seminar series that covers the following areas:

The Walrus will soon be seeking applicants for terms of both three and six months. Interns work approximately thirty-five hours per week, unpaid, with some schedule flexibility outside of final production periods, to allow for part-time work. This program is competitive, and is intended for candidates who are just beginning their careers.

The Walrus Foundation Events and Marketing Internship is designed for those interested in event planning and marketing at The Walrus. Interning for the charitable, non-profit Walrus Foundation, the events coordinator/marketing intern will work closely with the co-publisher and executive director, director of marketing and circulation, volunteers, and staff of The Walrus Foundation.

Major components of this position include: assisting with event coordination and production, developing and implementing promotional pieces, assisting with print and online marketing campaigns, and managing partnerships. The events coordinator/marketing intern will also execute media outreach, manage The Walrus magazine’s press archives, and be given the opportunity to assist with the overall circulation and marketing strategy.

The ideal candidate will hold a university degree or equivalent, be highly organized, efficient, and detail/deadline oriented. Other qualifications include excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, familiarity with Microsoft applications — especially Excel — and, of course, an interest in event planning and marketing in the non-profit sector.

The walrusmagazine.com online editorial internship is designed to introduce aspiring writers and editors to the online publishing industry and to train them to work to the standards of one of North America’s finest general interest publications.

The online editorial intern receives instruction in principles of reporting, writing, editing, and copy editing as well as training on publishing software. His or her primary responsibilities are contributing to The Walrus Blog, maintaining The Walrus’s Facebook page, and assisting in the conversion of magazine content for web use. The web intern also participates in editorial, production, and marketing meetings.

Internship terms are four-to-six months, unpaid. Interns work thirty hours per week, with flexibility in scheduling in order to allow for part-time work. There may be intermittent opportunities to provide paid content for the magazine as well.
